le terroir

The French word for ‘earth’ is terroir – but, virtually untranslateable; terroir expresses a fusion of soil, climate, temperature, water and the actions of those who tend the vines.  Thus it communicates all the immeasurable qualities of a single, special place that lend a wine its unique character.  The terroir of Bellevue embraces excellent limestone and light clay soil, soft rainfall, optimum sunshine and a south-south-westerly aspect.  It also benefits from gentle prevailing winds that inhibit mildew and help dry the earth in winter and spring.  The vines coexist with unspoilt flora and fauna to create a balance between vineyard and nature, whilst natural cultivation methods and traditional wine-making techniques complete the integrity of the entire wine-making cycle.

The superb terroir, established wines and excellent location, enable Domaine de Bellevue to produce outstanding wines. The 3.3 hectares of vineyards contain 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes; harvesting is by hand and the wine is aged in oak barrels for two years in the caves.
The first harvest took place in 2005 and a low level of production will be maintained to preserve the superior quality of the vintages.
